- Sports radio: Chicago used to have some stellar talk radio. At one point, the lineup was Brandmeier, Matthews, Dahl, and then Coppock on sports in the evening. That may have been as good a radio lineup as ever existed, but none of those guys is still on the air here, and radio has been terrible here for years. Somehow, Coppock's show is the one that has lasted. In fact, the station where he was on after the evening drive became 100% sports, and now the ESPN outlet here. Middays, Tom Waddle (ex-Chicago Bear) and Mark Silverman host a show that is about sports, but covers a lot of ground and is pretty funny. It's probably my favorite radio show at the moment.
A close second is Mully and Hanley on WSCR in the morning drive hours. Where Waddle and Silvy are smart but goofy, M&H are sports writers turned radio hosts. They have fantastic chemistry and outstanding stories. They also have a knack for finding people to interview who may not be central in a particular issue, but may have a more entertaining take on the issue. Both shows are available condensed as podcasts.
I have always been an ancillary sports fan - especially outside of the Chicago Bears. Listening to these shows has brought me up to speed on the other sports in Chicago to where I enjoy a Cubs or Sox game even more. I get some of the context around the games now. Besides, politics is frustrating and at times infuriating, even if I listen to a station that agrees with my perspective. Sports talk includes lots of manufactured drama, but it's much lighter fare.
Speaking of sports, did you know that for $20 you can listen to the home or away radio call for EVERY MLB GAME for the full season? It's true, and the subscription comes with "At Bat" - a virtual scorecard. The MLB video package is much more expensive, but who can actually watch TV at work, anyhow?
- Podcasts: NPR has some shows that I love, but I typically miss them when they run. All are available as podcasts. Wait Wait Don't Tell Me is probably my favorite radio show of all, but it runs on Saturday morning for one hour. I like Car Talk and Whad'ya Know as well. I have all of these fed into Bloglines, so I can listen to them there or just go to their Podcast pages.
Another stellar podcast is Tank Riot. I don't even remember who suggested it, but it's a few guys up in Madison having a fairly well researched discussion about just about anything. I've heard other people say that they're put off by the accents and constant giggling, but that hasn't bothered me. It feels like you're listening in on a conversation at a pub.
As off-pace and disjointed as it is, I also like Jonesy's Jukebox, although it's harder to find now. I guess L.A.'s Indie 103.1 fell apart or changed management or something, but Jonesy is no longer there. Check out iamrogue.com to see if he is able to re-launch his refreshingly different rock talk show.
One that has been recommended to me a bunch of times but I haven't quite wholly grasped yet is WFMU's podcast. When I look at the liner notes for each podcast, I should enjoy the hell out of them. I think there's just too much other stuff around the meat of the interviews and discussions that causes me to lose interest. I'm posting it because people whose opinions I respect LOOOOOVE it.

Tired of Music?
I'm lucky to be able to listen to stuff on my computer at work. I typically listen to music, but sometimes I need something else. Here are a few of my options:
